After
1990 AD farmers of Nuwaraeliya and Badulla district
try to cultivate potatoes in there Chena and Paddy
fields. In those days they cultivated Desiree
potatoes and that potatoes hasn't biggest harvest,
although it has 1:4 - 1:6 radio harvest. In those
time Desiree seed potatoes 50 Kg is could be
imported about Rs.2500.
After
1995 various types of seed potatoes are identified
and farmers cultivate those potatoes seeds. Ex:
Agria, Sante, Marabal, Agriya, Layra, Kondora,
Arinda ........... Some of that potatoes had about
1:20 ratio of harvest and after few years harvest is
decreased soon. Then farmers become darkest era.
In
2000 and after 2000 there is new potatoes type
called "Granola" was come. It is very suitable
to cool and up country lands and paddies. More
farmers have being got about 1:20 ratio of harvest.
In
now potatoes is very popular vegetable in Welimada,
Nuwaraeliya and Uva - Paranagama area. many farmers
get much income from potatoes cultivation. Water
supply is very essential for potatoes cultivation
and nowadays chemical fertilizers and N, K vitamin
fertilizers are used to get good harvest.
But
in nowadays, 50 Kg Granola seed potatoes is imported
at about Rs.12000 and 50 kg Urea fertilizer bag is
about Rs.6500. There fore full stop of potatoes
cultivation is not so far. There fore our (Governors
of country) duty is protect potatoes farmer from
international companies and agro chemical sells man.
If it happens we should import potatoes from Europe,
India or other country. |
